A Flat roof is the most popular roofing style in the Bronx, New York. The term can be slightly misleading but a flat roof is technically any roof with a 10-degree pitch or less. The flat roof has many benefits, running from price and ease of maintenance to being a practical solution for creating outdoor space.

Here are basic tips of what to consider when replacing a flat roof:

What is the best material to put on a flat roof?

Flat roofs come in various materials that each range in prices and expected life spans. A few of the most popular options are:

EPDM (Ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber) – A type of single-ply roofing material that can be found anywhere and is quick to apply. It has lower costs and is guaranteed for a 30 year period.

TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin single-ply roofing) – this is another single-ply material that is very popular in the green community since it can come in white which is more energy-efficient.

Modified bitumen – is newer material made of a combined rubber or plastic materials plus asphalt for reinforcement. These roofs are easy to maintain and can last 20 years or more.

Metal – metal has long been used in traditional roofs for many years and can be used for flat roofs as well. Known for its strength and long life space it can be a great option despite its higher initial costs.

How often should a flat roof be inspected?

Inspections allow for catching problems before they become serious, thus saving costs and time down the road. It is suggested that at least 2 times a year an inspector comes to check the flat roof and in the fall and spring is a good schedule (before and after the Bronx snowfall).

There is a stereotype that flat roofs can leak more, and this is party true IF there was not a quality installation job. Since the pitch of the roof is less than a shingled roof, there must be proper sealant and waterproofing material to prevent damage from snow and rain. Inspections help by checking the places on the roof which can lead to larger issues.

How much does it cost to replace a flat roof?

As mentioned above the material used in the flat roof varies in price. On average in the Bronx area, a flat roof installation will cost between $3-$6 per square foot.

If you have found a leak or in the roof, it is vital to repair it as soon as possible and this can be about $300-$500.

What weight can my flat roof support?

Flat roofs are not always made for heavyweight or even to be walked on. It is important to speak with your roofing professional to learn the capacity of the roof. Some flat roofs are built reinforced for the purpose of creating rooftop patios or gardens, but if you are not certain it is not worth the risk. There are minor ways to mitigate the risk like laying down wooden boards to walk on if you must go up on the roof to check something on your own.

Preparing for roofing, whether you start your own roofing business or need to equip yourself to go to work, requires some tools just to get out of the door. We have compiled a list of these tools so that you can prioritize your purchases. Although we have listed those that seem important to us, this is far from being a complete inventory.

Roofing Nailer

A nailer is a primary tool that makes you a roofer. The skill you develop in nailing and adjusting your nailer is what is necessary for the roofing process. Overall, the most effective roofing nail gun is a coil nailer. You can get them in several different sizes that adapt to several different nail lengths. They are also useful if you need to pull ring shank nails to deposit plywood. There are battery and pneumatic models, and they both do the job. By far, however, the industry favorite is still the air pistol. With any nailer, you need to be certain you have enough attachments to keep it working.

Many people also like staplers. Staples that have a crown of 1″ to ½” are also beneficial roof fasteners. Most suppliers of coil nailers also have a version of the stapler. The most significant disadvantage of staplers is that they are much more specific to the particular type of staples you are using and that most staplers are not for roofing.

Roofing Hammer

It is the hand tool that you will most often need to accompany your nailer. Most often, to hit nails that were not correctly oriented, you can always get a good seal in the tar line. Sometimes you have to pull a nail and start over. It is the primary tool to have in your nail bags, with your roofing knife. It will help you remove stray tiles, clean up the work area, and hit the nails during the final inspection. When you go to buy a roofing hammer, you will notice that there are several different forms of the hammer, which all come under the title of the roofing hammer. Some look like a hatchet. Others look like an ordinary hammer with one of the claws missing. Different looks are standard with different types of roofs to choose from.

Shingle Remover

The term is often synonymous with roof shovel. There is a specific version of a shingle remover that looks like a toothed shovel, but there are several versions of a shingle remover that are all used in different applications. Some aim to facilitate the tearing of a person. It helps guide the old roof removed in a roll. It also has wheels and gives you a cart to help transport it. Others are for a traditional team that can form a tear-off roll fairly quickly and carries it for disposal.

Hammer Stapler

Roof work can stop without the proper tools to lower the underlayment. A hammer stapler allows you to staple your paper with the same quick motion as you nail down the tiles keeping your team productive and using techniques familiar to them. Hammer staplers are durable and use T-50 staples, the most common and most natural to obtain. They have the same essential parts as an ordinary T-50 staple gun, except that they are impact adjusted so that they are easy to use and can be refilled on site.

Ladder

You should know you aren’t getting any job done in the absence of a ladder. And if you’ve been using an increasingly unstable ladder for a long time, it’s time to get a new ladder that gives you a sense of security. This is because a new ladder is a commitment to make sure you get on that roof and do it safely. The two and three-fold adjustable ladders are very durable, sturdy and can be compacted to a size that easily fits in any vehicle for transportation. Extension ladders have various adaptations to reach the roof or the installation of ladder jacks for staging to contain the material. These are very handy when you are on a steep slope and need a place to work.

Safety Harness

On low-pitched rooftops where balance is no issue and where the overhang are under 12 feet or progressively over the ground, you can have a sense of security working with simply rooftop racks and boards square. It is adequate. Be that as it may, to have confidence in rooftop security, particularly on taller structures, it’s ideal to buy a safety bridle. The saddle is just piece of an individual fall capture framework. This is known as a “framework” since the entirety of the parts – the outfit, cord, link tie, rope, and rooftop grapple – are painstakingly intended to function together. The rooftop grapple ought to be safely appended to strong wood, for example, a crossbeam, bracket, or edge shaft, not right through the rooftop boards or compressed wood. Models vary in applications, so study their particular manuals and follow wisely. Here are some key focuses:

Conclusion

It is always good to try out these DIY steps on your own, especially when such a roofing project or roofing repair isn’t critical. However, don’t hesitate to contact roofing professionals if things get too complicated.

During the winter season, your roof gets tested by the wind, hail, snow, ice, and continual thaw-freeze conditions. These elements of Mother Nature can result in severe and often hidden damage to the roof. After every winter, it’s always prudent to check your roof for any sign of damage inflicted on your roof by these unwelcome elements and prepare it for the spring. Without proper roof check-up and subsequent repairs, if there’s a need for it, you stand a considerable risk of exposing the whole structure to unprecedented damages – damages that could have easily been avoided. The safest bet on getting your roof set for the winter is by employing the services of a professional roofing contractor. Nevertheless, you, as a homeowner, have some roles to play as well.

So, how do you go about maintaining and getting your roof fit for the blooming spring? Here are some tips every homeowner should adopt when it comes to spring roofing.

Clean Your Gutter

Clearing of the gutters is one crucial roofing maintenance job that can easily be pulled by any homeowner; even the least experienced the lots. Clogged gutters pose more threat to the home’s structure than you can ever imagine. When gutters are not inspected and cleaned as at when due, the debris pile up and the gutter will fail to drain, causing an overflow. The moisture buildup can potentially damage the structural integrity of your home. To nip the bud, you have to conduct a thorough inspection of your gutters first, then remove any debris that may have built up in your gutters over the winter. Once you’re sure that all the debris has adequately been taken care of, use your hose to flush out any remaining residue.

Inspect Your Roof

After the gutter inspection and clean up comes the roof inspection. If your roof is flat or has a low pitch, carrying out a check may be quite easy, but if it’s a well-pitched roof, well, you might want to call your local roofer to help you out here. Roof inspection involves checking the roof for debris pile up, keen lookout for any sign of weak spots on the shingles, loose or damaged shingles, rust, or algae or fungus. Any these can serve as a pointer to roof damage that will require an immediate proactive response. Weak or loose shingles may appear like a minute problem, but if it’s ignored, the spring can weigh griever consequences on the roof. In like manner, mold or algae formation is a pointer of roof leaks, if you don’t involve the services of a roof repair and replacement company, the wet weather that comes can exacerbate these problems much too quickly.

Trim Back Any Overhanging Branches

With tree branches growing so close to your home and even extending so close to your roof, there’s a substantial lurking threat to your roof structure. Any overhanging branches can break off and land on your roof, potentially causing damage to your shingles and gutters. Take care of the branches before it takes care of your roof.

Tie All Loose Ends

Spring roofing involves touching diverse aspects of your roofing construct, inspecting and repairing all possible weak links in your roof. When conducting such, different things need to be taken care of. These may include getting rid of any animal nests found in the vents of columns along the edges of the roofs, replacing flash or loose flashing, and tightening loose bolts, particularly for metal roofs.

Spring roofing needs not to be an arduous task for you. Considering the benefits, it might just be perfect for leaving not only the maintenance and repairs but even the inspection to Royal Roofing & Siding Brooklyn 2380 Ralph Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11234 (718) 536-2667.

When last did you take a good look at your roof? Like really decided to take a break and inspect your roof. How do you know when it’s time to call professionals to have a look at the roof? A lot of you reading this will say yes I do know! Ok let’s generalize it. Since you can obviously tell when your roof needs repair what then is stopping you from calling professional roofers to have your roof fixed? The only reason there could be for seeing the obvious and neglecting is the fear of cost in repair. If this is you, I want to bring to your notice that you are not alone. It seems like a general dilemma but what people do not understand is damage on a roof is something you cannot procrastinate on. You want to know why? I will tell you; you cannot procrastinate on roof repairs because the more you do the more the expenses increase. We all are human so we definitely have something so important we are saving for and that is where all our attention is driven at. It is unfortunate that even if you have been saving for that new car, a family trip, or upgrading your wardrobe and it makes you think you can’t afford to tackle the signs in your roof signifying potential damage, well I’m here to tell you that by the time you are ready, the expenses would have grown higher. It is advised by contractors and always good to call a professional roofer to inspect your roof more often. Most of the signs signifying a potential damage to the roof can be seen from the ground while some are notable when you climb the rooftop yourself or when roof specialist does that for you. Below are the warning signs.

Buckled, missing, cracked, and curled are signs that the roof is getting old. When we see these signs, we always want to remember when the house was built; this is to ascertain if the roof has lived up to its life span expectation. On the norm, the useful life of a typical asphalt/fiberglass shingle is 20-25 years, well this depends on the quality of the shingle and where you live in the country among other factors. However, over time the granules that protect the shingle material from UV rays begin to fall off exposing the material to the elements. Prolonged exposure causes the shingles to crack or curl upwards at the edges. When it cracks and the wind blows almost immediately after the crack, the wind will facilitate the shingles breaking into pieces and flying off the roof.

This is one of the first signs anyone can notice on his or her roof; its sad many individuals tend to neglect this sign. A dark or stained area on your roof is a result of algae or fungi growth which can cause certain areas on the roof to appear dirty or black. This is a problem for the roof as the mold or algae will start eating away the shingle base slowly thereby causing them to loosen and decay. To prevent the above from happening, if you spot any dark areas on your roof and you cannot climb to take a look at it, contact a professional roofing contractor to inspect your roof on your behalf and determine if the stains are indeed algae growth.

When a deteriorating shingle is not changed, it will gradually head to the sheathing panel of the roof. The situation getting to sheathing is what we have to avoid, but the truth is that many of us do not even know the cause of shingle deterioration. Well, deterioration can be caused by many factors, of which algae and mold are one of them. When a deteriorating roof goes undetected and reaches the sheathing panels, then it may be too late because sheathing is the connection between the shingles and the rafters of every roof. Whenever this connection is weak, it will make the roof more vulnerable to lose during high winds, and storms can eventually compromise the integrity of your roof.

Blistering and peeling of outside paint are one of the easiest warning signs to spot. Many homeowners often see this sign and ignore them due to the fact that they likely do not know what is causing the problem. Blistering or peeling of outside paint is the result of high humidity or excessive moisture caused by poor ventilation (especially in the attic). Poor ventilation will result in hot air being built up and trapped in the attic. This excess heat is responsible for the blistering, bubbling and peeling of the exterior paint around the gables. To prevent the above from happening, you ought to have a properly working attic fan and make sure your bathroom exhausts are working properly.

Watermark signs are rarely seen on the roof, the only way to detect or notice them is when the roof starts leaking, which is a little bit too late and kind of hard to pinpoint the exact place on the roof. Roofing leaks may be a result of deterioration or insufficient underlayment which is very costly to repair.

In conclusion, you need to look out for these signs; whenever you notice any, you have to immediately seek a way to get it tackled because procrastinating will only lead to more expenses. If, on the other hand, you can’t get on the rooftop and you want to inspect the roof, all you need is a professional roofer. If you live in NYC, reach out to our office to schedule a day and time we can come and have your roof inspected.

In as much as it is always good to seek the services of professionals in certain things, there are still measures an individual can take to prevent those extra expenses being paid to the professional. This applies to almost everything in life, just like the popular adage “prevention is better than cure.” As a house owner, there some small things you ought to take care of yourself so as to make your roof last longer for you. These measures are just minor things you can do yourself well unless you are so occupied that you barely live in your house except on holidays. In this article, we will be looking at those measures we ought to take ourselves to ensure that our roof is kept safe from small damages because even if we are buoyant enough to always seek the service of roofers or maintenance, you can never tell maybe before their arrival at your home more damages would have been done either by wind or by rain. This could be prevented if only we take out little time to monitor our roof situations.

We all know how important it is to have a good roof over our head. The roof protects the rest of the home from damage, adds value to your home, helps keep your home cool or hold in heat, and gives you a happier place to live. However, even if the roof is not new, if you decide to follow these simple maintenance tips, your roof will be in a top condition much longer than even expected.

Clean All Debris From Your Roof

We advise you to clean all the debris from your roof at least twice a year. Debris such as leaves, dirt, pine needles and plastics can overtime cause mildew and mold to grow on the roof and cause damages. By keeping the roof free of debris it literally means you are removing the potential for damage to your roof thus keeping the roof in good condition always.

Trim Overhanging Tree Branches

Trees beautify home no doubts, but we ought to monitor the growths of these trees if you are the one that likes your tree tall and near the roof, then you should always be ready to trim it often.

Keep Gutters Clean

Keeping your gutters free of debris will make it not to get clogged. We all know how expensive it is to repair a clogged gutter. Clean gutters make it easy for the passage of rainwater away from your roof.

Replace Cracked Mortar

If during an inspection and you notice that your mortar is cracked, quickly change them before it becomes worse and damage the chimneys as well.

Damaged Shingles and Roofing Tiles

If you notice a single shingle or roofing tile is damaged, replace it immediately. Many people think a missing shingle or roof tile is nothing to worry about, yes it looks so until the rest starts pulling off without you knowing.

The above are simple measures one can easily schedule him or herself to do, if however you do not have any spare time for this, then you have to trust the service of professional roofers like us to handle it for you.

Every building comes with coverage from the elements. As more properties are being constructed, more alternative types of roofing membrane materials have become available. As all roofs are not entirely alike, the choice material varies as well. If you have a flat roof or a pitched one, and you are in the market for any roof repair or replacement call, you may want to consider the different types of membranes and the very best in the industry.

The Top Choice Roofing Membranes

Epdm

The ethylene propylene diene monomer, otherwise known as EPDM or EPDM rubber is the most popular type of thermoset roofing system, used by most Americans. It’s made from synthetic rubber or similar materials, which are bonded together, forming a continuous membrane. EPDM can be installed using fasteners to mechanically anchor it, ballasting it with stone, or using adhesive. EPDM roofing systems are widely used roofing materials due to its vast advantages. Also, its ease of installation and lower routine maintenance needs makes it a premium choice of roofing membrane by most homeowners.

Pros

Cons

Pvc

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and TPO are the famous members of the thermoplastic membrane family. Given its numerous benefits, it’s no brainer why this material is one of the most used roofing material. Although it is made likely as the EPDM rubber, its seams are however heat-fused to form a continuous membrane. The PVC roofing systems are a reliable choice. It has a longevity that stretches for over 20 years. Also, its availability in white color helps it reflect harsh UV rays and makes an energy-efficient roofing option. Been able to withstand up to 300 pounds per inch, which is a 100 pounds heavier than the industry recommended standard goes to show how well the PVC has gone to occupy an enviable space in the roofing industry.

Pros

Cons

Tpo

Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO) is much like PVC. It comprises of polypropylene and ethylene-propylene rubber blend. It is very durable with high resistance to UV rays and water. The turn off is that this roofing material tends to age quicker and deteriorates mostly around the fasteners.

Modified Bitumen

Asphalt roofing structures are more linked to this roofing membrane. The modified bitumen is made from an asphalt base, rubber modifiers and solvents. The modifiers act to improve the general membrane’s flexibility and elasticity.

Pros

Cons

With the advance in technology, more and more materials are bound to be received every other day in the industry.

Choosing the right roofing material for your roof replacement project is important to keeping your home safe from destructive outdoor elements. It may sound like a small thing, but you need to remember that the right roofing material can help you save money, add visual appeal to your home, and keep your family safe. With this in mind, it is important you seek for a roofing replacement company like us that uses first-rate materials to guarantee a lasting improvement in your home.

Roof pitch

To refine your list of materials, pay attention to the slope of your roof. The ability of your roof to drain water is a decisive factor. Asphalt shingles are the most popular choice in the industry, but that’s only because most American residential roofs have a steep slope. If some of the slopes of your roof are low, use a specialized product that is more resistant to leaks when exposed to pool water.

Architectural authenticity

Respect the tradition when replacing your roof. If your house has a traditional style, chances are its material is already predetermined by history. Usually, traditional houses use wooden shingles, slates and masonry tiles. On the other hand, contemporary properties are better off with metal roofing systems.

If most of the neighboring houses have eclectic exterior designs, feel free to break the rules. A specialist can give you the right advice to make sure you don’t end up with a roof that looks more out of place than unique and elegant.

Weather endurance

Consider the durability of the material. Proper installation and proper maintenance can make a roof last as long as possible, but you need to know the expected longevity of the product. The set of qualities of the material defines its resistance to weathering, so find out how everyone reacts to the elements and the type of climate in your region before making a decision.

Long term maintenance

Purchasing a new roof system is a decades-long commitment. While all materials require maintenance to last, some are more expensive to maintain than others, so consider it too.

Weight of material

The weight of the material can affect the timing and labor cost of your project. If you choose a heavier material than the one that currently covers your home, structural adjustments may be necessary to ensure that your home can support the additional weight.

Price range

Most importantly, check your budget to find out how much you can afford. The prices of roofing products can differ considerably, and the materials represent a significant part of the cost of your project. In addition to equipment, make room in your budget for labor, permit applications, and unexpected modifications or repairs.

Driving in the highways we do come across different signboards advertising companies be it new or old. What people don’t realize is that the people be behind these companies did not just wake up and start erupting signboards of their companies all over the city. These companies must be licensed before being eligible to display their company on boards along the roads. Displaying companies on board means that the company being displayed is very much officially operating. There are certain procedures that must be followed to get a company licensed. Each country has its own licensing rule that is seen as the general criteria. That is not the end of the requirement; coming down to states, each county in that state still does have one or two they will add to that of the state, this is because not all states within a country are equal. This article will look at how to get any company license in NYC.

How to get a company licensed in NYC

To get a roofing company licensed in NYC, the roofers need to go through some series of processes. In that, you will need to submit the following documents;

The documents are required just for the background check only. The background check process is mandated before you can submit an application to be a contractor. Once the background check is successful and has been cleared, next will be another set of documents you need to fill out in order to properly apply for your company’s license. However, in most cases, applications that pass the background check are easily able to get their licenses approved. This is the general step in getting a company licensed in New York.

In other words, different county in New York have their own additional requirement they will need before granting the license. For instance, the requirement of getting a roofing company licensed in Queens County will not be the same as that of Bronx County. These additional requirements are thus dependent on the local law in whatever county you choose to start the company. This shows that before proceeding to get your company licensed, you ought to first and foremost check the licensing requirement for both state and county. It is also advisable that every company looking to get a license in the city of New York should do so through an application adviser. This is because each step of the background check is only done through an application adviser and it is better since they know the process more than anyone.

We all love to admire rooftops; these rooftops are made with different materials, sometimes it’s obvious at mere looking when two different buildings are close to each other. Marveling at the beauty of the roof makes us look like spectators without actually knowing what it is made of, like why would we care, it’s none of our business right!. Rooftops are made from a variety of materials each serving a different purpose. In this modern era where technology and advancements are the order of the day, rooftop manufacturers have also step-up their own game and this is either due to competition or improvement for some environmental situations.  When building a new house or replacing a current roof, it is pertinent that you choose the right roofing material based on the type of roof you have already. A roof protects the house from outside elements while also adding beauty to the home. The choice of roofing materials should be picked based on the shape and structure of the home as well as the local weather and elements.

The following questions should be considered when choosing roofing materials

Having answers to these questions will help a lot in determining the best choice and roofing supplies for your home. Below we are going to be looking at the different materials used in making these beautiful rooftops we so admire and also with their cons and pros.

Asphalt Shingles

This is the most common residential roofing material used in the United States. Asphalt shingles are very popular because they are easy to install and economical. They can be reinforced with organic materials (cellulose) or fiberglass without altering the appearance of the shingle. It is known to have two kinds, first the Laminated also known as dimensional or architectural and the three-tab shingles. Asphalt shingles is made up of fiber glass infused with asphalt which is then covered with mineral granules or ceramic.

Pros: it is one of the least expensive materials; they come in a variety of colors. It is also widely available.

Cons: Asphalt doesn’t provide the insulation other materials offer, secondly it has a shorter life span than other roofing materials.

Clay and Concrete Tiles

Concrete and Clay tiles add texture and elegance to a roof. A genuine ribbed, flat or scalloped clay tiles are extremely durable but very heavy and thus must be installed by a professional. Concrete tiles are less expensive and very versatile than genuine clay, but it also has a heavyweight.

Pros: concrete tiles are energy efficient and also, they are long-lasting and non-combustible.

Cons: they are very heavy, expensive and usually require additional framing.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofs are available in two types, panels and shingles. They are resistant to extreme weather conditions; metal roofs come in zinc, aluminum, stainless steel and copper. Metal roofing material is becoming more and more popular, especially in areas that are prone to wildfires. Metal roofing is also ideal for places that are experiencing hotter climates such as tropical countries for the medium which does not absorb heat from direct sunlight. Instead, it will reflect or mirrors back the sun rays efficiently thus keeping the inside cooler. This quality is extremely beneficial during the summer months. Metal roofs are normally maintenance free and they are very durable.

Pros: Metal roofing lasts longer and they more durable than asphalt or wood. They also offer high solar reflectance.

Cons: Metal roofing is very expensive.

Slate

These roof types are known for offering lots of beauty and a distinctive elegant appearance; slate colors include shades of grey, red, black, purple and green. Slate roofing is one of the most expensive and historic roofing materials for good reason. A slate roof can last well over 75 years.

Pros: Slate is a sustainable roof that can be recycled; it is very durable and fire-resistant.

Cons: Slate is heavy, expensive and requires extra framing and professional installation.

Wood Shingles

Wood shingle roofs are made from wedge-shaped pieces of natural wood. They are very attractive, natural-looking and environmentally-friendly. Wood roofs are not advised to be used in areas that are prone to wildfires.

Pros: Wood shingles offer a rustic look and are a natural product usually made from redwood, cedar and southern pine.

Cons:  Wood shingles can be a concern in wet climates, and can mold, rot or split. In some areas, fire codes prohibit use.

Synthetic Roofing Products

There are now synthetic roofing products, e.g., plastic, rubber and polymer roofing, which are developed to give you the look, color and texture of natural materials like wood and slate. These products are designed to be strong and easy to maintain; a lot of these materials are also fire-resistant.

Pros: Synthetic roofs are not heavy, expensive, or fragile as some natural products.

Cons: Some of these products absorb water making it prone to early damage.

In conclusion, the choice of roofing materials depends on the preference of the homeowner and the condition of the environment. Before proceeding to choose, one should also endeavor to check their disadvantage and advantage before proceeding. Also it’s advised you do check the cost of each installation before proceeding; this is to prevent going broke in the quest to beautify a roof.
